FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

GENERAL

Kruger Untamed operates seasonally between 1 May and 30 September. Our tented camps disappear entirely after each season, leaving no trace behind.

We have two remote camps – Tshokwane River Camp and Satara Plains Camp – both set within private, wildlife-rich concessions in Kruger National Park, away from tourist crowds.

We offer immersive safaris in seasonal, eco-sensitive tented camps. You’ll experience raw wilderness with butler fed safari showers, campfire dining, and expert-led tracking. This is a light-luxury, deep-wilderness experience.

Yes. All activities are led by armed, highly trained guides. Camp safety includes electric fencing, 24/7 monitoring, and staff on standby for emergencies.

COMPARING OUR CAMPS

Simply put, it begins with a base rate that includes accommodation, meals, drinks, and one game drive daily. From there, guests can layer on additional elements – a second daily game drive, a walking safari or transfers to/from the closest airports to craft the safari that suits them best.

Tshokwane River Camp (20 tents): Accommodation, all meals, all house beverages, 2 daily safari activities (Includes both walking safaris and game drives, allowing guests to choose their preferred daily activity at no surcharge.)

Satara Plains Camp (30 tents): The base rate includes accommodation, all meals, all house beverages, one game drive per day. Guests may add a second game drive or walking safari at an additional cost.

Both camps offer the same high service levels, but differ in scale, dining style, and landscapes: Tshokwane provides more extensive walking opportunities, while Satara’s plains lend themselves to expansive game viewing.

Not at all – they are intentionally different. Tshokwane is smaller, with more space between tents and a refined dining experience, ideal for guests who value culinary detail and immersive walking safaris. Satara is larger, with tents set closer together, perfect for families or groups of friends, with hearty dining that celebrates South African flavours.

Both can accommodate groups, depending on needs:

At Tshokwane, walking and tracking are a core focus. For groups booking 14 tents or more, exclusive use of the camp is required to preserve the guest experience.

At Satara, larger groups are easily managed, with exclusive use required once 20 tents are booked. Any surcharges for additional game drives or walks are tailored to the group’s requests.

WILDLIFE & ACTIVITIES

Kruger is home to the Big Five – lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo – as well as cheetah, wild dog, giraffe, hippo, hyena, various antelope, honey badger,  bushbabies, baboons and zebra to name a few, and 500+ bird species. Sightings are never guaranteed and sometimes the small stuff is just as exciting, if not more, than the big stuff!

Yes. At Satara Plains Camp we offer one daily game drive in an open safari vehicle. Additional game drives can be arranged at an extra cost. You can also do walks at Satara Plains Camp but these need to be booked at least four weeks in advance of your arrival. At Tshokwane River Camp we offer two daily game drives or walks in place of a morning drive. Walks are limited to eight guests and led by certified Trails Guides.

At Tshokwane, the standard is a maximum of 6 guests per vehicle. Groups travelling together may request to share up to 8 guests in a single vehicle.

At Satara, the standard is a maximum of 8 guests per vehicle.

Yes. At Satara Plains Camp you have one game drive daily included in your stay and you get to choose whether it’s a morning or a Our afternoon drives continue into the evening where nocturnal animals are often spotted . At Tshokwane River Camp we offer daily late afternoon/evening drives. Evening drives can return as late as 22:00, offering a chance to encounter nocturnal wildlife under the stars.

Reservations and camp staff always refer to it as the afternoon drive – for consistency, i suggest we keep it universal but describe that it goes into the evening

A walking safari is about slowing down and immersing yourself in the world around you – the plants, birds, insects, tracks, and small signs of life that often go unnoticed from a vehicle. It gives guests time to absorb the interconnections of nature, listen to the subtle sounds of the bush, and appreciate the quiet rhythms of the landscape. The pace is gentle, moving at the speed of the slowest person, and can be tailored to suit any fitness level.

In contrast, a tracking experience is about reading the signs that animals leave behind — following fresh spoor, interpreting footprints, droppings, scratchings, and other traces to piece together an animal’s story. It’s more focused, investigative, and if you’re lucky, leads you into direct encounter with wildlife in their habitat. The distance is set by the animal we track, and guests should be ready for longer walks, sometimes up to six hours or more.

Each walking safari takes a maximum of 8 guests, always guided by two expert armed guides.

Each tracking experience takes a maximum of 7 guests, always guided by two expert armed guides and accompanied by a tracker.

This is a rare and powerful tracking walk led by Renias Mhlongo, one of Africa’s most respected master trackers and is available at Tshokwane River Lodge only. You’ll learn to interpret signs and follow animals using ancient skills passed down over generations.

Yes, as one walks under guidance of a professional guide. At Kruger Untamed, walks are only conducted under strict safety protocols with both a Lead and Backup Trails Guide, both armed and experienced.

Yes. Private drives and private walking safaris are available on request, based on availability and at an additional charge at Tshkowane River Camp, unfortunately no private excursions can be arranged at Satara Plains Camp at this stage.

The difference lies in the number of people on a walk or drive, and sharing the experience with other guests. On a standard game drive or walk guests travelling as a couple or solo traveller/s may be grouped with other travellers to fill the vehicle or walks to its indicated capacity, in comparison on a private game drive or walk the guest will have exclusive use of the experience without being grouped with other guest not travelling with them.

An additional game drive has flexibility, if a guest would like to book a 2nd game drive on a specific date they can do so at the time of making their reservation or they can add it on while in camp. This should be confirmed to the camp manager prior to the drive starting (for instance: if an afternoon game drive is required as the additional drive, the guest should communicate this before noon, similarly if a guest would like to add on a morning game drive it should be confirmed the night before)
