SATARA PLAINS CAMP

A legendary wilderness awaits...

Satara Plains Camp is Kruger Untamed’s newest camp, launched in July 2024. Open from 1 May to 30 September for South Africa’s winter season, it offers phenomenal access to one of the most exceptional wildlife regions in the Kruger National Park – one that’s globally renowned for its big cats, huge herds of buffalo and elephant, as well as other predators like painted wolves (African wild dogs) and spotted hyena.

The camp is located in the heart of the Satara region, famed for its lions and other apex predators, a few kilometres from the Kruger National Park’s Satara Rest Camp. It provides a unique base from which to explore this legendary area, with the fabled S100 route that follows the course of the Nwanetsi River close at hand.

Satara Plains Camp isn’t just about ticking off the Big Five – it’s about immersing yourself in the raw, unfiltered energy of the wild. Here, you don’t just observe nature; you become part of it. Feel the rhythm of the bush, tune into the whispers of the savannah, and embrace a safari experience that’s anything but ordinary. This is where the untamed beauty of Kruger takes centre stage, and every moment is an invitation to connect with the wilderness.

ABOUT SATARA PLAINS CAMP

The camp is laid out on the edge of a vast savannah, making the most of its unique location in one of the most revered wildlife areas of the Kruger National Park. Each of the 15 luxury tents is positioned for maximum privacy in a grove of shade trees, offering complete immersion in the surrounding wilderness. From lounging on your secluded verandah and drifting off to sleep beneath fresh, crisp linen, to dining under the canopy of the Milky Way, every element of the camp is designed to offer understated luxury without compromising on comfort or the true essence of the wild.

Your luxury tented suite

Offering everything you need, and nothing you don’t, Kruger Untamed’s tented suites are a masterclass in simple luxury, taking the concept of camping in an untamed wilderness above and beyond.

There is nothing to beat the thrill of sleeping under canvas, where your senses come to life and you connect directly with the wild landscapes around you.

Canvas enables you to experience the African bush differently – savouring the smell of morning dew on raw earth, the scent of wild sage and potato bush…

You hear the eery call of the hyena, far away in the darkness; the soft, rasping call of a wandering leopard and the emotive roar of lions in the African night.

This is not camping – it’s refined simplicity at its finest, allowing you to rest deeply while still feeling the presence of the wild just beyond your canvas walls.

Your bedroom area is spacious, accommodating a queen-size bed with luxurious linen, soft, fluffy duvets, plush pillows and warm blankets.

Bedside tables with lamps cast soft light in the evenings and ethereal mosquito nets are both practical and romantic.

A separate dressing area offers a vanity mirror, space to hang clothing, a luggage rack and waste bin. It leads on to the en-suite bathroom with its single wash basin and water containers.

Luxury amenities (soap, shampoo, body wash, body lotion) are provided.

A flushing RV-style chemical toilet is refreshed and cleaned twice a day, and there’s space to unpack your belongings as well as a refreshing safari shower which is filled with hot water twice a day, in the mornings after your morning game activities and in the evenings before you go to bed.

Should you need to shower outside of these times, please ask the camp manager and this can be arranged – but there will be a delay while water is heated over an open fire!

Camp Facilities

Satara Plains Camp’s beautifully appointed communal dining space is where guests gather for wonderful meals crafted from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Expect a sumptuous breakfast spreads with the option of a “full English”, light lunches, and a set-menu three-course dinner infused with authentic bush flavours, all served under the vaulted African sky. Please let us know well ahead of your stay if you have dietary requirements as these will need to be catered for.

The camp’s bar area is another favourite gathering point where you can sample everything from premium spirits (not included in the rate) and local “house” wines and beers, soft drinks, teas and coffees (all included). Bottled water is readily available.

The camp has lots of space to relax both in the main communal area and out in the surrounding savannah where an extended lounge area with gazebos and pergolas, hanging chairs, sun loungers, firepit and outdoor wood-fired hot tub offer more than enough places to enjoy camp life.

As night falls, we gather around the campfire – swapping tales of the day’s adventures and enjoying after dinner drinks, taking in the stars above and the magical sounds that fill the air. When you are ready to turn in, you are accompanied to your tent by a ranger where a hot shower and comfortable bed await.
