TSHOKWANE RIVER CAMP

Discover the heart of Kruger

Tshokwane River Camp is Kruger Untamed’s original camp – the first of its kind in the Kruger National Park park. Open from 1 May to 30 September for South Africa’s winter season, it offers a rare opportunity to experience the allure of Kruger at its most spectacular – unscripted, unfiltered and untamed. For those who crave an unspoilt, deeply immersive safari that balances luxury with authenticity, this is it.

Located in a region that’s considered the beating heart of the Kruger National Park, a few kilometres from the legendary Tshokwane picnic site, the camp is perfectly placed to deliver unrivalled access to this area’s prolific wildlife and the dramatic landscapes that unfold along the seasonal Ripape River.

A stay at Tshokwane River Camp is about more than just spotting the Big Five. It’s about surrendering to the natural rhythm of the wild, feeling the pulse of the bush around you, and soaking in the untamed beauty of this extraordinary setting. It’s an escape designed for those who want to ditch the ordinary and embrace the extraordinary.

ABOUT TSHOKWANE RIVER CAMP

The camp is designed thoughtfully to completely immerse you in one of the most sought-after wilderness areas in Southern Africa. Each of the 15 luxury tents is positioned for maximum privacy on the banks of the seasonal Ripape River, overlooking its dry bed, offering an uninterrupted connection to the surrounding wilderness. Whether you’re unwinding on your private, shaded verandah or sinking into crisp linen after a day of adventure, every detail has been carefully considered to ensure an effortless blend of simple luxury without scrimping on comfort and authenticity.

Your luxury tented suite

Offering everything you need, and nothing you don’t, Kruger Untamed’s tented suites are a masterclass in simple luxury, taking the concept of camping in an untamed wilderness above and beyond.

There is nothing to beat the thrill of sleeping under canvas, where your senses come to life and you connect directly with the wild landscapes around you.

Canvas enables you to experience the African bush differently – savouring the smell of morning dew on raw earth, the scent of wild sage and potato bush…

You hear the eery call of the hyena, far away in the darkness; the soft, rasping call of a wandering leopard and the emotive roar of lions in the African night.

This is not camping – it’s refined simplicity at its finest, allowing you to rest deeply while still feeling the presence of the wild just beyond your canvas walls.

Your bedroom area is spacious, accommodating a queen-size bed with luxurious linen, soft, fluffy duvets, plush pillows and warm blankets.

Bedside tables with lamps cast soft light in the evenings and ethereal mosquito nets are both practical and romantic.

A separate dressing area offers a vanity mirror, space to hang clothing, a luggage rack and waste bin. It leads on to the en-suite bathroom with its single wash basin and water containers.

Luxury amenities (soap, shampoo, body wash, body lotion) are provided.

A flushing RV-style chemical toilet is refreshed and cleaned twice a day, and there’s space to unpack your belongings as well as a refreshing safari shower which is filled with hot water twice a day, in the mornings after your morning game activities and in the evenings before you go to bed.

Should you need to shower outside of these times, please ask the camp manager and this can be arranged – but there will be a delay while water is heated over an open fire!

Camp Facilities

Tshokwane River Camp’s beautifully appointed communal dining space is where guests gather for wonderful meals crafted from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Expect a sumptuous breakfast spreads with the option of a “full English”, light lunches, and a set-menu three-course dinner infused with authentic bush flavours, all served under the vaulted African sky. Please let us know well ahead of your stay if you have dietary requirements as these will need to be catered for.

The camp’s bar area is another favourite gathering point where you can sample everything from premium spirits (not included in the rate) and local “house” wines and beers, soft drinks, teas and coffees (all included). Bottled water is readily available.

The camp has lots of space to relax up at the main communal area on the riverbank, with places to relax with a good book and chat with friends and family. But it’s down on the dry Ripape riverbed that the magic of this place is truly experiences, in an extended lounge area with gazebos and pergolas, hanging chairs, sun loungers and our camp pool.

As night falls, it’s here that we gather around the riverbed firepit – swapping tales of the day’s adventures and enjoying after dinner drinks, allowing the soundtrack of Africa at night to relax you ready for bed.

After dark you are accompanied to your tent by a ranger for a wonderful nights’ sleep.
