Kruger Untamed Satara

Two camps, one unforgettable safari

Discover the exceptional experiences on offer at Kruger Untamed

At Kruger Untamed, the safari isn’t something you simply observe – it’s something you live. From the moment you arrive at either Satara Plains Camp or Tshokwane River Camp, the wild wraps around you and gently pulls you into its rhythm. There’s a tangible shift – a slowing down, a deep breath out, a tuning in. These seasonal camps, open from May to September, offer the rarest kind of luxury: immersion in one of Africa’s greatest wilderness areas, far from the noise, close to the Earth.

The feeling of being different starts at your collection points – Tshokwane Picnic Site for Tshokwane River Camp and Satara Rest Camp for Satara Plains Camp. It’s here at these busy places that your Kruger Untamed guide meets you, shows you where to park (in a secure parking lot at both locations) and gives you your first insight into what it means to be a Kruger Untamed guest.

As you climb onto our branded safari vehicles, the adventure begins…

The reality of becoming “untamed” hits you as soon as you pull off the main roads of Kruger and head into uncharted territory, beyond the “No Entry” signs. This is an expedition into the unusual – a strange and unique feeling in one of Africa’s most celebrated national parks.

The locations are exceptional.

Tshokwane River Camp is magical – soft, shaded, cocooned by mature trees high on the banks of the seasonal Ripape River and fronted by a the river’s dry, sandy bed that draws wildlife in throughout the day. Elephants appear silently at dawn. Kudu and nyala pick their way through the undergrowth at lunch. At night, bush babies leap through the trees and owls call from the canopy. It’s a camp made for exhaling – and for that unmistakable sense of awe that creeps in when you realise you’re not just in nature, you’re part of it. There’s intimacy here, in the views, in the quiet, in the way everyone slowly lets go of the need to rush.

From the moment you arrive to a warm welcome and smiling faces to the moment you wave goodbye, you feel part of something special. It’s not just the plush décor and the immaculate finishes – the true luxury here is how time slows down and allows you to absorb everything, giving you the chance to immerse yourself in the spirit of wilderness.

Whether it’s sitting back on a sofa with views over the riverbed or sitting quietly on the private deck of your gorgeous tented suite, listening to the chattering of squirrels and watching bushbuck move through the undergrowth, time seems to fade into insignificance.

At Satara Plains Camp, the pace is imperceptibly slower and the topography very different. You’ll find yourself surrounded by endless golden grasslands that ripple in the wind and host some of the highest densities of lions anywhere in the park.

This is big cat country – leopard trails wind close to camp, and lion tracks are often found right on the sandy paths nearby. Here, the feeling is open, expansive, grounded. You can see weather systems rolling across the plains, feel the full power of an African sunrise, and hear the hyenas whooping under a silver moon. Every tent offers comfort, privacy and space, but the real luxury is just beyond the canvas: the ability to feel the bush at its most alive.

There’s little to beat the sensation of lowering yourself into a hot tub beneath a leafy canopy as sunlight filters through the trees and steam gently rises on a soft breeze, a bottle of bubbly on ice next to you and your special someone sharing the wonder of it all. This is immersion therapy taken to its ultimate conclusion, creating memories that will last a lifetime!

In both camps, the days follow a rhythm set not by clocks but by birdsong and sunlight. You rise with the dawn and step straight into the scent of wild sage, the low call of ground hornbills drifting across the air. Morning game drives are crisp and golden, often punctuated by lion sightings or a leopard vanishing into a marula tree. Or you head out on foot, following the tracks of hyena, buffalo, and elephant – an unscripted experience led by guides and trackers who read the landscape like a story still unfolding.

Back at camp, there’s no rush. Mornings fade into lazy afternoons: a cold drink, a nap, a book, a quiet chat in the shade. Each tented suite offers a front-row seat to nature’s theatre, and each meal – served in the open-air dining area or under the stars – is crafted with care. This is where guests connect, not just with each other, but with themselves. No pretence. No performance. Just the raw, restorative joy of being somewhere real.

Evenings bring their own kind of magic. Sundowners are taken at waterholes, viewpoints, or on riverbanks, often in the company of giraffes or zebras. As darkness falls, the fires are lit and stories are shared – of the day’s sightings, of long-forgotten memories sparked by the crackling flames, of what it feels like to live fully present. You fall asleep to a soundscape that changes nightly – sometimes a lion’s roar, sometimes the chorus of frogs, sometimes silence so profound it settles deep in your bones.

At Kruger Untamed, your experience unfolds moment by moment, sighting by sighting, breath by breath. Whether you’re walking through lion territory, watching elephants drink just metres away, or sipping coffee as the bush comes alive, you’re not just visiting. You’re remembering. Remembering what it means to feel the world around you. And when you go tracking with the Shangaan, a whole new world opens up to you – one you never know existed, and everything in this magical place suddenly makes sense as the interconnectedness falls into place.

And that feeling? It stays with you, long after the dust has settled and you’ve returned home. Saying goodbye is impossible. It becomes more of a “see you soon” because you know you’ll return. Again and again. Once you’ve experienced untamed, you’ll never be the same!

Kruger Untamed is the Kruger National Park’s first seasonal luxury tented camp concession. Available for stays during Winter months only, our camps are said to be the highlight for any Kruger Park enthusiast wanting a deeper connection with the wild.
